16-08-2013 Friday - Haines to Skagway & White Pass Rail

The weather was a bit iffy today, a bit of sprinkling rain to start with.

The resident eagle and his friend.

We were driven by the hotel courtesy buses to the boat harbour to catch a water taxi back to Skagway.  Once again the staff on the ship gave a great commentary about the area.  A few pictures taken through rain sprinkled windows.

There were only two cruise ships in the harbour today.

As you can see, it was a bit cooler today too.  We boarded the White Pass & Yukon Railroad, built during the days of the Klondike Goldrush.

Although it rained a bit and the top was a bit foggy we were still able to see quite a lot and were amazed at the work that the men had to do to create the railroad the treks they had gone on before that.

Mounted Police post - Canadian side of border.

This is the USA/Canadian border - no passports needed as we were not disembarking.

The old railroad bridge - a bit eerie.

Coming out of a tunnel.

Before we went back down we passed a train that had left just before us.  We had to go on to a siding and the engine changed to the other end of the train which then gave us clear pictures out the back.

Here we can see the other train ahead of us down below.

Bridal Veil Falls.  Cascading 6,000ft from the glaciers on Mt Cleveland and Mt Clifford.

The view back down to Skagway.

There were bends where we were able to see the other end of the train.

Back down we were able to take a picture of old engine 52 - no longer in service.

Downtown Skagway.  Finally all ended up with rain-proof jackets, Dawn even put the hood on a couple of times much to the boys amusement?

We were supposed to catch the water taxi back but it had an engine issue and so we were on a different boat carrying over 100 people back to Haines.

Once we arrived back we left Steven at the hotel and walked down to the Bald Eagle Foundation.

As you can see they have set up 'stuffed' animals (no animals were killed for this display - all died naturally/accidentally), all labelled and described.

It was a good way of seeing the size differences between animals too.

A very well presented display with other rooms for movie viewing, bone and skin displays, etc.

He's just a big cuddly bear really.

We then walked around to Fort Seward which are buildings originally used by the army but now private houses.

A view of Fort Seward from a distance so you can see the extent of the buildings.

Still a bit miserable looking.
