Sorry about no blog updates - limited internet access :(
A bit foggy this morning for a very early start. Had to go through US Customs.
Had a dark spot turning up on the pictures - finally figured out it was on the sensor after cleaning the lens & checking thoroughly. Had to flip up the translucent mirror & gently brush the sensor - after quite a few shots, noticed some more smaller ones & had to brush it again.
After the fog lifted it was a spectacular day.
Lighthouse on one of the Five Finger Islands.
Jumping Salmon - saw quite a few of these.
The splash after it landed.
We saw 2 Bald Eagles in a tree.
Ketchikan - cruise ships. We caught a local bus from the Ferry Terminal into the town - The Cruise ships are moored close to the town centre.
A Totem on the way to Creek Street....
To see the salmon coming up stream.
They go to the end of the stream where they spawn (lay their eggs). From the thousands that start the treacherous journey very few get to make it to the end.
They literally jump over rocks and against the current of the stream for their lives.
Lots of the front shops opposite where the cruise ships come in are jewellery ships, often run by the cruise companies themselves, and they only operate during the summer season and close down over winter.
Inside the ferry on the observation deck. Just in front of Steven (yes the man with the beard) you can see the GPS attached to the window with the new suction cup John wasted some of our time looking for in shops at Prince Rupert as he lost the other one.
On our way to Wrangell.
Our first sighting of a humpback whale. In the distance you see the spout, what looks like a bright spark of light come out of the water just a little bit and it fades to look like a puff of smoke.
A bit later one came much closer to the ferry. Watch it's progress....
you can just spot the tail as it dives again....
up it comes again....
going down nose at top of screen and tail at bottom.....
you can see most of the body now.....
diving down....
and up flips the tail .... magnificent !!
beautiful sunset :)
Even the moon sets here. It went down behind the mountains.
Us looking at the sunset views.
The night time view of Wrangell as we came in on the ferry.
The Stikine Inn, were we stayed - named after the Stikine River, taken the next day.
