04-08-2013 Sunday - Banff - Tunnel Mountain & Hot Springs

This morning we transferred to the Banff Park Lodge - this is where the tour group will be this evening.

Dawn & John did a hike to the top of Tunnel Mountain. Quite steep & tiring.  We were told
the first part was a bit steep and then it would be a matter of following the tracks as they crossed across the mountain, known as 'switchbacks'.  It took us 50 minutes to get to the top and at the end everyone we passed kept saying 'not much further, you are nearly there' when asked how much further it was but we still had a fair way to go so made sure we were a bit more exact with times we gave people on the way down.

Picture of Tunnel Mountain from the street.

Close-up of the top.

The view in the opposite direction of Banff.

Banff.  We had finally reached the top and is started to spit quite heavily on our way down so we got a bit wet - but it had stopped by the time we reached the bottom.

Double checked - These aren't chipmunks but ground squirrels.   These were much smaller than the first squirrels we had seen and had the stripes thus the confusion.  Chipmunks have stripes on their faces too.

We all caught a bus to the Upper Hot Springs - 41°C - we stayed there for a while - too hot for John & Steven.

As much as the springs were invigorating they also left us all exhausted - or maybe it was that long walk too!!

Mt Rundle - clouds extending from the peak.

Cascade Mountain, showing some of the Holiday weekend traffic - the buses were up to 1Hr off the schedule.

It was actually a long weekend in the area for 'Heritage Day' .
